JCB’s brand excavator handler, designed especially for the waste industry, was officially launched to the Australian market on Tuesday at the first of a series of nationwide demonstration events.

The all-new 20-tonne JS20MH Wastemaster Excavator is built specifically to meet the needs of the demanding waste and recycling industry environment, with a range of protective guards and a high-rise cab.

According to Deon Cope, Excavator Product Manager for Australian distributor JCB CEA, the new model arrives at the ideal time for the Australian market, which is starting to move away from the traditional landfill approach to waste management to a greater focus on recycling.

“The JS20MH excavator handler can work in both types of operation so it’s perfectly matched to the needs of the industry now and into the future,” he says.

“The increased visibility from the high-rise cab means the handlers can easily pick out and separate specific pieces of waste. This degree of control is going to make a huge difference in waste facilities where it’s becoming more important to be able to carefully sort materials. The bird’s eye view also makes it easier for operators to avoid over or under loading trucks.”

Deon says the new model will play an integral role for owners and operators of waste facilities and is a reflection of JCB’s understanding of the sector.

JS20MH excavator handler has been designed for ruggedness and durability

“JCB has extensive global experience in designing machinery for the waste industry. We know that waste handling is demanding on equipment so the JS20MH Wastemaster has been designed for ruggedness and durability,” Deon says.

“This includes guards to protect vulnerable components and hoses and a completely new undercarriage which offers excellent all-round stability and uniform lift performance throughout the machine’s 360° rotation.”

The JS20MH is powered by a 93kW JCB Ecomax T4i engine, delivering lower emissions while operating in confined spaces without the need for a diesel particulate filter. It has a 5.7m straight boom with optional extras including a 4m gooseneck dipper for scrap applications or a shorter 3.6m straight dipper for waste applications.
The JS20MH has been designed for maximum operator safety as well as productivity.

“Working with waste can be high risk for operators so they need to be properly protected. Our FOPS system protects against falling objects, with windscreen guards and roof guards adding an extra layer of protection,” he says.
The cab of the JS20MH has extra protection all round, plus air conditioning for comfortable operation. The engine is protected by an intelligent reversible fan for optimum cooling and a scavenger system on the air pre-cleaner for additional filtration. The model is equipped with a hydraulically raised cab, making for improved vision and safety on site.

There is also a wide core cooling pack which prevents the engine overheating in circumstances where the workload is heavy.

“Waste operations are heavy duty environments where overheating can be a significant issue, so this model is deliberately engineered to minimise the risk,” Deon says.

In addition to the purpose-built JS20MH, JCB also offers its TLT35D teletruck and 541-70WM telehandler with the Wastemaster specification package, which allows the machines to meet the particular needs of scrap and waste handling.

“Equipment is a major investment for waste operations. Our Wastemaster specifications ensure there is strong return on investment over the life of the machine by delivering durable, productive machines that are very safe for operators,” Deon says.

The JS20MH is expected to be of interest to public and private waste management operations including municipal solid waste and specialist material recycling companies.
